1988: Vintage Cobras
1988 was actually not a very big year for Cobra, there were very few Cobras released this year on cards, most were vehicle drivers. The most significant carded Cobra from this year was the first version of the Toxo Viper. The most significant figures to come out this year were other bad guys who eventually become absorbed into Cobra or were allied with them, namely a great new version of Destro and his own personal army, the Iron Grenadiers. I had been waiting many years for them to make toys of Destro's personal army, who were loosely alluded to in his 1983 file card, it figures they'd finally get around to it AFTER I stopped collecting! The other significant figure from this year was the Dreadnok Roadpig. He is one of my favorite 'noks. Out of all of the gang, he really looks the most like a character out of Mad Max, I love his anarchy tattoo, his cinder bloc on a stick weapon and his imposing size. He was the only Dreadnok to last into the 1990s, when he received a 2nd, repainted release. He was an amusing enough character as well, who had a pathological devotion to Zarana as well as multiple personalities. As an adult collector I made sure to acquire the excellent 2nd release of Destro, who comes off as far more dignified an lordly than the first version, and whose file card revealed some fascinating info about his family history and mask (which actually made it into The Rise of Cobra). I also picked up his right hand man, Voltar, the general of his army. I dig Voltar, I hear that a lot of folks don't, but I think he looks pretty cool. The fact that he originally came with a pet vulture was a bit goofy though. Of course, I also had to have Road Pig as he is full of win and also I was dedicated to having all the vintage Dreadnoks.
