Blythe-a-Day 13. Pumpkins & 30. Trick or Treat: Halloween with Princess a Grace & Prince Leo the Imp

Halloween meant very different things to Princess Grace and her little son, the impish Prince Leo. For the Princess, far from taking her children trick or treating or wearing a costume and attending a Halloween party, she and Prince Rainier hosted a grand dinner for French President De Gaulle. It was a great success, as glamorous and stately as it was stuffy. Hence, on returning home, the Princess was tired from feeling that she had to strain to try to inject some joy into the achingly formal dinner. As she sat on the sofa, she stared into the distance, her mind finally being at rest. She was too drained even to be aware of her children and their desire for the joy of the holiday.

Leo, seeing that his mother looked forlorn as she failed even to notice his presence, decided that he was going to bring the holiday spirit to her. And being an imp, he thought what better plan than to play a prank?

Thus, as Princess Grace's mind was far away, the little Prince quietly climbed onto the sofa, bringing has Jack O' Lantern, filled with candy, with him. What a surprise he was about to give her! She was going to be proud ,of him, he thought, for playing such an unexpected, startling--and sweet--joke.

He hoped to lift the pumpkin over her head and let the candy spill out all over her.

"I'll make it rain candy," he thought with excitement.

But his plan backfired. As he neared her shoulder, he accidentally dropped the Jack O' Lantern, causing a candy volcano to erupt. Though this action was similar to the effect he had wanted, it lacked the elan of his original plan.

Smiling at her while she jumped up with fright, he waited for the appreciation and affection that he hoped his imaginative prank would inspire, even if it had not gone as planned.

Initially, she was greatly annoyed but stifled her impulse to yell at him. After all, he was a child and the fun he was dedicated to experiencing was a natural instinct.

How she envied him at that moment: to be a child with little understanding of starchy royal duties such as those that had taken up her holiday....

To be a child...

At times, therefore, it was a blessing to have such a mischievous son as Prince Leo the Imp.

To Be Continued.
