Little Bittern
This shot was taken last Summer, when my friends & I visited a small stretch of river, running alongside a holiday camp site, in Hungary.
Our guide told us that the narrow ribbon of marginal reed bed there was a bit of a hot-spot for these shy little birds.
We weren't disappointed & were lucky enough to see a half dozen, or so, in the couple of hours we spent there.
A wholly different experience to the one shared by the hundreds of birders & photographers who visited the RSPB Lakenheath fen reserve, in Suffolk. A single secretive individual there had them all waiting around for weeks, just to catch a glimpse of it. I remember spending a morning there myself, hoping to see it, but only hearing an occasional muffled call from somewhere deep in the green stuff.
Best viewed large, to see it's catch.
