My first Cabbage Patch Kid
April Lynn, received Christmas, 1983, when I was 4. I named her myself! She came with some goofy name that I hated.
This is what I remember of that Christmas. We were at my mom's house, but this was before she married my dad. She was still just "my dad's girlfriend." All the gifts had been opened, and we were enjoying chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. But then my mom cocked her head and said, "Alan, do you hear something?" He played along and said he heard babies crying! We went on a hunt through the house until we came upon the place where they had hidden a Cabbage Patch Kid for each of us! We were beyond thrilled with our gifts; they were the "it" gift to receive in the early 80s.
April is wearing a flannel gown that my mom made for her to match the one she had made for me. I could have sworn mine was yellow, so I'm guessing that this gown may have belonged to my sister's CPK, and I simply inherited it when I got a boxful of CPK clothes from my mom somewhere along the line. My gown had more detail to it, much like my thrift store find from today.
April is still in fantastic condition, considering that I used to take her outside and play with her all the time, and that she is now 25 years old. Her face still smells of baby powder, as it should, and she's still perfectly stitched. I think the reason she's in such good condition is because I played and slept with my Pound Puppy, Arthur, far more than I did with her.
