Hidden Treasure, Picnic Point County Park, Washington

After spending the three days recently hiking in the rain hunting for waterfalls, creeks, and generally damp forest-y-type compositions in the the Olympic Peninsula, I was beat. On the long drive home, the clouds started breaking up and were shaping up to pretty interesting. The first thing I thought of was, "The sun. It burnses us, precious... Why does it burnss us?" The second thing was, "Where can I be for sunset and can I make it in time?"

Well, thanks to some photography friends I've met online, I was recently introduced to this great little beach very close to my house--which I had never even heard of! Thought this was possibly a good time to capitalize on this new-found knowledge--so dropped the fam off at home, quickly unloaded the car, grabbed my gear and booked out for the beach.

When I arrived, the sun was setting and the tide was very low. Which... means pretty much every composition I had in mind was out the window as I wasn't expecting that at all! Just another joy of the ocean. Instead, a whole array of new compositions opened up. In this shot, one of the first ones I took there last night, a small creek was emptying into the sea. And, because of the super low tide, its waters fanned out into a wide shallow flow making this composition possible.

Wasn't a bad way to close out the weekend. I'm not sure where else in the country you can spend the same day in the mountains, in a rain forest, and on an ocean beach.
