On cameraphones

Streetsy actually started out as a camera-phone project- I thought it would be fun to document graffiti as I walked around, using this revolutionary new technology. Back then (before 2003?) the best my camera-phone could do was a 400x300 image- I think that's like 0.12 megapixels. I thought I'd restrict using my good camera (a Canon G2!) for serious photography stuff- it wasn't until late 2004 that I realized that was dumb, and started using an SLR or a serious P&S for all my graffiti shots.

Now, seven years later, the iPhone takes a 4 megapixel image, which is coincidentally the same amount that the Canon G2 offered. It seems to take a pretty good picture for straight-on shots- which seems fine as a backup when your main camera fails (I forgot the battery on my SLR today)- or just in general for pictures that don't need to be perfect or printed.

I may use it more for stuff like this- get back to my Streetsy cameraphone roots. Last year I threw out my last Point & Shoot (the Canon SD950)- so now it's either lug an SLR, shoot on film (I use a Contax T2 for P&S stuff sometimes), or use the iPhone. And since shooting with an SLR or on film takes some post-processing work (RAW --> JPG, or scanning), the iPhone is a compelling choice. I've been using it mainly with Hipstamatic, set on random, with a few films and lenses added to the set. Most of the filters look good with graffiti. And there's the bonus feature of geotagging.

Have any of you been using an iPhone for their graf shots?
