Maiko Momiyu 1964
“Japan: where yesterday meets tomorrow. One of Kyoto’s most famous Geishas is Momiyu. Top Geishas are very much sought after and highly paid – but they have to undergo an elaborate training programme first. Momiyu’s tasks include serving food to diners (the food is first brought to her by a servant) and ensuring that their sake (rice-wine) is at the right temperature. After the meal she will perform ritual dances. Her intricate dress and hair-style are in the traditional Kyoto style; she wears jewels and metal ornaments which make a bell-like sound as she moves. ‘Gei’ means accomplishment and ‘Sha’ means person – so a Geisha is simply a person of pleasing accomplishments.”
