For the past couple of weeks, I've woken up at 2:00 on the dot, regardless of what time I fell asleep. Today, I woke up at 2:00 and immediately thought, "Treadmill!"
I've been meaning to get back into the Couch-to-5k running program, but with my graveyard hours and the rabid dogs running around my neighborhood, I never have the time (or courage) to get out there. And it's a shame because running is pretty much all I want to do. It's the bane of my existence, but I love it.
So I woke up this "morning" and remembered the old treadmill my sister bought about ten years ago, when we still lived in Chicago. I knew it was out on the back deck, so I went and got an extension cord, plugged it in and ... nothing. Fuck.
I called my sister and she said, "Is the red emergency plug still there?"
Me: "What? Plug?"
Grubs: "The red thing. The thing you stick in the slot so that if you wipe out, the red thing falls out and the treadmill stops and you don't die?"
Me: "Oh, that."
Luckily, it was still there. I plugged it in and viola! I'm going to start running again! I really, really, really, really, really hate running on a treadmill, preferring to pound actual pavement, but at this point I'll take what I can get. And at least I'll still be out in the fresh air. I figure I can inhale some fruit or a Luna bar on the way home from work, let the dogs out when I get here, change into my running gear and hop on the treadmill. Or I can run when I wake up. Given that summer's just around the corner, I think I'd rather get the run over with while it's still cool. Back when I was jobless and free to work out everyday for as long as I wanted, I would be out on the track by 7:30 or 8 a.m. Just me, the mist and a killdeer. Good times.
I've lost quite a bit of weight since February, and all without exercising, so I'm planning on stepping things up by running again. My sister has a recumbent bike she uses while she knits, but I prefer something a little more exciting.
So I've got a bit of cleaning to do first, but the important thing is: IT WORKS!
