Lilac-Breasted Roller (Coracias caudata)

 

The roller on the left caught a juicy caterpillar and then proceeded to smash it repeatedly against its perch. The bird on the right soon joined and seemed to have an eye on the meal. It seemed impossible that the bird could swallow the caterpillar and in fact I thought it was choking when it tried. Eventually it muscled the treat down successfully.
