Two TTL flashes for portraits
by Jens Bladt
When using two TTL flashes (key light and fill light) for portraits certain issues do appear:
1. The camera meter will cut off the flash light, when the total amount of light is enough for a proper exposure (This is how TTL works). This means that one of the flash units contributes to cutting off other flash units. So balancing two units is kinda tricky.
2. The camera will meter the ambient light of the scene according to the selected metering method, e.g. Spot, Center weigthed, Matrix. The flash light however, is measured by matrix metering the preflash (P-TTL).
This test show which setting can be adequate for portraits.
I place the key light to the right side. This way the fill light comes conveniently from the left, when the camera is tilted for portrait mode.
