998... Sale, as seen by J. P. Joule

The physicist J. P. Joule (after whom the unit of energy is named) was born in Sale in 1818. Short of going back in time, this is about the only way of seeing Sale through old Jimbo's eyes: over the shoulder of his statue in Worthington Park, some 18ft in the air*. All the exposure and focusing was set manually, and I then held my tripod, at full stretch with the camera on top, over my head on a 10-second timer. You can see my shadow just next to J. P.'s. :-)

* I'm sure Joule would have approved of the formula I used to deduce the altitude of this photograph:

a = ((h - hs) + al + t + c) - g

where:

a = altitude

h = my height

hs = my head size

al = my arm length

t = tripod height at full stretch

c = camera height

g = grippage offset coefficient (approximate overlap of t and al caused by grippage of legs of tripod with hands)

This continues my recent Sale theme as I go all-out for that Sale Photographic Competition 2007 trophy!

I'm still rapidly approaching my 1000th photo on Flickr - this is #998. Ideas are beginning to hatch for the big one! :-)

News Flash! This photo is in the top 20 in the Sale Festival Photographic Competition, and I've also won 3rd prize with this one. Yippee!
