Mimicry

The Gray Hairstreak Butterfly (Strymon melinus) has evolved a defense pattern in which the nonvital hind wing mimics the vital head. Twin tails that mimic antenna on the head accompany an orange and black eyespot at the edge of the hind wing. Predators are therefore likely to snip at the tail, thinking it's the head, and thus allow the butterfly to escape alive.
