Black-crested Bulbul - Pycnonotus flaviventris - นกปรอดเหลืองหัวจุก

This photograph of a Black-crested Bulbul (Pycnonotus flaviventris) shows why I need a better camera body. This bird was photographed in the subdued lighting of Khao Yai National Park in Thailand. It was taken at 1/320 sec at 6.3 with ISO 800 using a hand-held 400 mm lens. I need a faster shutter speed for hand-held pictures, and less sensor noise at higher ISO settings. Nevertheless, I was delighted to see this bird, as I am a birder and not a photographer.

In the right situation, Bulbuls are a delight to hear as well as see. The word 'bulbul' comes from an old Persian word for 'nightingale', suggesting they have a beautiful call. indeed, most Bulbuls have a lovely song and many are used as caged pets, though some are not very musical.

This Bulbul has been given two different species names, being 'menanicterus' and 'flaviventris' ,with the latter (which means 'yellow bellied' if I recall my high school Latin) now being widely accepted. While most Black-created Bulbuls lack a red throat, the subspecies P. flaviventris johnsonii, found in eastern Thailand, is thus adorned.

As usual, comments, corrections and criticisms are appreciated.
