Black-whiskered Vireo 26 Apr 2015 w FL
A Black-whiskered Vireo foraging in barrier island woodland. Recorded 26 April 2015 in Veterans Park, Okaloosa Island, Okaloosa County, Florida, USA.
eBird check-list: ebird.org/ebird/edit/checklist?subID=S23067404
This may be the second record in Okaloosa County; the first being by Lenny Fenimore and Don Ware on 11 May 1997 at Destin, FL. I haven't checked with Duncan & Duncan.
I discovered the bird foraging in the lower foliage of oaks and got Roger Cook on it right away. It continued to forage about 8-15 feet from the ground; no singing or calling was heard. Roger took some better photos than mine, including a head profile that shows the massive bill very well. Roger also took a photo showing the eye much redder than my photo. Some of Roger's photos begin or end at www.flickr.com/photos/roger56/17283301705/ After I had left the area, Roger showed the bird to Murray Cragin, see his photos at www.flickr.com/photos/mchawk/17076349247 and
