I Will Follow You Into the Dark

© Billy Wilson 2010

A shot of Carmen lying down infront of a little pond. This is Carmen, I met her on Model Mayhem, her Model Mayhem number is: 1209787.

About the Photo

*Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS *Lens: EF-S 18-55mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 IS *Shutter Speed: 1/6 Sec. *Aperture Value: ƒ/3.5 *ISO: 100 *Focal Length: 18mm (28.8mm Equivalent in 35mm Film)

I shot this on a tripod using mirror lockup and a 2 Sec. selftimer. The key light was provided by a Canon Speedlite 430EX II shot into a 60" Westcott reflective umbrella, triggered by a Canon ST-E2 wireless Speedlite transmitter, I think it was to the left and infront of the model. I can't remember the exact settings but it probably wasn't at full power since it was the evening.

There is a lot of editing done to this image, not all of it done at once. I edited a bit then left it and came back another day, altogether, there is probably 14 hours of editing done to this image. The background is tone mapped by Photomatix Pro. Carmen's skin has a subtle "Dave Hill Effect" to it, and the grittiness of the look has been softened by healing tools on the skin. I have extensively removed the chromatic aberrations and noise, which took a very long time. Since there was a lot of noise in the background (from tone mapping) and the shot was taken at 18mm, I added gaussian blur to the background to make it look smooth. All editing in CS4 was done while the image was uncompressed, at the end I converted to sRGB colourspace and saved as a JPEG to upload to the internet.
