The edit amused me. The original intrigues me. This was once an area of failing agricultural land sold off as small plots of land for "no frills" weekend retreats from the early 1900's with some existing until the 1980's. In the post war years, and the decades since, modern development of the nearby towns of Laindon and Basildon took over, fortunately with a large area given to nature reserve. But there is evidence of these "plotlands" still visible amongst the woodland today. About 20 feet away are the remains of the corner of a small brick built bungalow. Therefore this almost certainly was indeed "an old man's garden'" of my imagination...
