It is said in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, that a Giant had taken up residence in the ruins of the castle which dominates the village in the company of a magpie and that he terrorized the village populations. One day, Guilhem, tired of having to deal with the fear that the Giant had on the village populations, decided to disguise herself as a servant and pretend to carry water to the castle to go and fight this impostor. He armed himself with “Joyeuse”, his legendary sword, and walked towards the fortress. As she walked around, the magpie lurking in the area noticed that the maid on her way to the castle did not look the same as usual. Called upon, the bird recognized Guilhem and went to warn the Giant in these terms:

- "Giant, it's not your maid who's coming to bring you water, it's Guilhem who's coming to kill you. "

But sure of himself and not doubting his superiority, the Giant ignored the warnings of his companion and opened the door of his fortress.

A bitter fight ensued which saw Guilhem's victory pushing his opponent down the cliffs of the castle.

The destitute magpie, having lost its protector, fled to hide, who knows where ...

Since that day, the inhabitants of the village have lived in peace and although the valley of Gellone is frequented by many species of birds, a magpie is never seen again.
