Mike's Neck Tie Quilt - Front 1

2012 Christmas gift to my husband.

7th of 7 quilts made for my family for Christmas 2012.

Quilt is made from 31 of my Father-in-law's neck ties, 4 of my husband's neck ties & 2 of my son's neck ties (including his first real tie!). Block backgrounds were made from some of my husband's shirts (the blues, stripes & plaid), and some Kona Solids (the solid white & solid yellows-Butter, Maize & Banana).

Quilt is my own design & is approximately 57 1/2" x 75 1/2"

This quilt has been in the planning/design phase ever since my Father-in-law passed away 20 years ago.

The plaid backing & binding fabric is one of Moda's Preppy Plaid brushed cottons - "brushed" side out to provide some coziness. Purchased from CityCraft - citycraftonline.com/

I wish that I had pieced the backing so that the plaids ran along the vertical lines of the back instead of the horizontal ones. I simply ran out of time to plan the placement of the backing fabric very carefully.

Thread used for quilting was Aurifil 50 wt in Cream (2021) purchased from The Fat Quarter Shop - www.fatquartershop.com/

Batting used is Quilter's Dream, 100% Cotton, Request loft. Purchased from Hancock's of Paducah - www.hancocks-paducah.com/

I am in love with this batting!

Relied heavily on EQ7 to plan this quilt!

A note about working with these ties:

Most of my father-in-law's ties were polyester - it was next to impossible to get those block seams to press flat with the cool iron they required. As a result, it was difficult to get the front as smooth as I like to avoid tucks in the quilting. However, those tucks that occurred were minimal & will likely not be apparent to anyone but me.

I did wash the ties in cold water & used an "air dry" setting on the dryer. Any ties that bled in that process weren't used. After washing, I took the ties apart & backed them with Pellon SF101 fusible woven interfacing just to give them a bit more durability over the life of the quilt. The SF101 adhered well to most of the ties.
