Old Fort Davis
Fort Davis was established by the US Army in the 1850s and named for the Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis. The US abandoned it at the beginning of the Civil War, and the Confederate army used it briefly. After the end of the war, the US Army moved back in and moved it slightly from its original location. Its primary purpose was to help defend travelers on the road from San Antonio to El Paso from Indian attack. The US sent buffalo soldiers to garrison the fort, which - given its namesake - may have been someone's idea of rubbing in the fact that the Confederacy lost the war.
