Birds and Water at Bosque del Apache

This is at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near Sorocco, NM. The Fish and Wildlife Service maintains the refuge by occasionally flooding areas with water from the nearby Rio Grande River, simulating the river's natural flow that has been controlled by upstream dams. The resulting wetlands are great attractions for birds and other wildlife. Visible in this image are sandhill cranes, pintail ducks, and probably a few mallards and Canada geese.
