Corsair Pass
An F-4U Corsair at the Wings Over Houston Air Show
These planes were the U.S. Marines' first line fighters during World War II and were the first single-engined airplanes in history to exceed 400 mph in level flight. Though originally developed for the U.S. Navy, the navy didn't adopt them at first since the long nose caused problems for the pilot's vision during a carrier landing. They eventually solved the problem, whereupon the navy adopted them for carrier use.
They continued to serve in the ground attack role in the Korean War.
