The Wall Comes Down

Barely visible in this photo is a name and date - Ida Siekmann, 22 Aug 1961. She was the first person to die as a consequence of the construction of the Berlin Wall, having died before the wall was even finished. This has some special salience for me, as my mother was named Siekman (a variation of Siekmann) before she married my father. Her Siekman ancestors came from Germany, and Ida Siekmann may have been related, possibly by marriage.
