Vultee BT-13 Basic Trainer
Flight training in the U.S. military starting in the 1930s would start out with ground training and then proceed to primary training, basic training, and advanced training in that order. Once the aviation cadet passed primary training, he would start flying one of these planes or something similar. It had a two-position propellor and more power than the primary trainer, and the cadet would begin learning things like night flying, instrument flying, and basic navigational skills in a plane like this.
