Though a Spanish citizen, Galvez helped smuggle arms and ammunition to the American colonists during the American revolution. He also did intelligence work for the Americans. When Spain declared war against England during the revolution, he took command of a group of Spanish soldiers and fought against the English in what was then West Florida.
