Praha Altar

A reprocessed photo from the archives. This is the altar area of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Praha, one of the famous painted churches of Texas.

Though the Praha area is now almost uninhabited, it gained a small degree of notoriety during World War II, when nine young men from the area were killed in action. That made Praha the town with the highest per capita losses of any town in the United States. The church has three grottos on the church grounds dedicated to their memory.
