Black Mesa and the Rio Grande Valley

Black Mesa is the small flat-topped hill in the approximate center of the image. After the Indians drove the Spanish out of New Mexico during the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, the Spanish returned to New Mexico in 1692. Most of the natives surrendered fairly quickly to the Spanish, but a few retreated to the top of Black Mesa, where they held out for a while longer. They finally surrendered in 1694.

While the revolt was ultimately unsuccessful, it was the only time Native Americans forced Europeans to abandon their North American colonies for any length of time. The Pueblo Indians credit it with being allowed by the Spanish to keep most of their culture, including their religion. The Pueblo Revolt has been called the first American Revolution.
