Red Beds in Palo Duro Canyon
Palo Duro Canyon, about 25 miles (40 km) from downtown Amarillo, TX, is the second largest canyon in the United States after the Grand Canyon in Arizona. At its deepest, Palo Duro is almost 1000 feet (300 m) deep, and it is about 120 miles (190 km) long. It was formed by erosion by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The Quartermaster formation lies at the bottom of the canyon and is of Permian age, or around 350 million years. It provides the red sediments seen here.
