Albert Sidney Johnston
Albert Sidney Johnston was born in Kentucky, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, and moved to Texas, where he owned a plantation named China Grove in Brazoria County.
He served as a general in the Texas army during Texas' years as a republic, in the U.S. army during the Mexican War and the Utah War, and in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Killed at the Battle of Shiloh, he was the highest ranking general of either army to die in battle.
He is buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, TX, and this sculpture, which was executed by Elisabet Ney, sits atop his grave.
