Model Moon

Created by artist Luke Jerram, this model of the moon is about 23 feet (7 m) in diameter and has imagery detailed down to 120 dots/inch. At a scale of 1:500,000 each inch corresponds to about eight miles of the lunar surface. In other words, the most detailed moon globe ever made.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science has this on display in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon, with TV sets on the walls showing videos of different moon landings.

In this view, the location of the Apollo 11 landing site in the Sea of Tranquility is to the right of center, about two-thirds of the way from the center of the moon to the edge on the viewer's right.
