The Road to the Basin
A photo I've posted before but reprocessed. This is the road up to the Chisos Basin from the surrounding desert in Big Bend National Park.
The basin is in the heart of the Chisos Mountains and has lodging, a ranger station, a camp ground, and a restaurant. Many of the visitors to the park use it and its facilities as their base of operations as they explore the park.
The park itself is one of the largest and most remote in the continental U.S., as measured in distance from the nearest airport with regularly scheduled air service. As a consequence, it gets only about 400,000 visitors a year. The nearest town of any size, Alpine, TX, has a population of less than 6000 and is over 100 miles (160 km) away. Not many people live in this part of Texas.
