At the Top of the Big Hill

FM 170 runs east to west from Study Butte, TX, to the town of Presidio. It runs alongside the Rio Grande River for much of its length and is called the Camino del Rio as a consequence. The Big Hill is a steep 15% grade hill that climbs 500 feet (150 m) or so to the top of Santana Mesa. The varied, volcanic terrain makes this one of the most spectacular 50 miles anywhere.
