At the Beginning of Pickett's Charge

A Confederate soldier in Pickett's Charge - the climactic event of the Battle of Gettysburg - would have seen something very much like this at the beginning of the charge. This is close to the line where the charge began, with Union lines on the ridge on the horizon, about a mile away. The battle occurred on almost exactly the same time of year and near the same time of day as when I took this photo. Even now not much has changed in the space between Union and Confederate lines. A few Union monuments are visible on the horizon, and Confederate monuments are to the right and left, not visible in this photo.
