Devil's Den From Little Round Top
Devil's Den is the pile of rocks in the center of the image. It was the scene of fierce fighting during the Battle of Gettysburg, due in part to the Union defenders' inability to dig into the rocky terrain. Their commander, General Sickles, had ordered them to occupy the area, thinking it gave them a better defensive position. The Confederates attacked on the second day of the battle and drove them out, but with heavy casualties on both sides.
