Let's Take a Ride

The P-47 was the largest and most powerful single-engine fighter plane of World War II and was produced in large numbers. Because of its size it was able to escort bombers a long way into occupied Europe and to carry large stores of munitions on the wings. That made it very good in a ground attack role.

This particular plane once belonged to the Venezuelan Air Force but was acquired by a U.S. collector in the 1990s and painted in the colors of a plane flown by a Lt. Davis of the 358th Fighter Group, 366th Fighter Squadron, 9th Air Force. It now belongs to the Lone Star Flight Museum in Houston, TX.

UPDATE: In 2020 the Lone Star Flight Museum sold Tarheel Hal to the Evansville War Museum in Evansville, Indiana. The plane was built in Evansville, along with 6241 other P-47s. The Evansville museum renamed the plane 'Hoosier Spirit II.' According to them, it is one of the only two airworthy P-47s in the world.
