Ancient Drilling Rig
Old-time drilling rig in a small museum on the campus of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX. Rather than a rotary drill bit used by more modern rigs, this one used something like a pile driver that pounded and pulverized the rock. These rigs were mostly used to drill water wells, but were sometimes used to drill shallow oil wells. The building containing the museum also has a small museum dedicated to Jimmy Dean, musician and sausage maker, who was a native of Plainview.
