Caprock Panorama
Much of the Texas panhandle sits on top of a geological formation locally known as the caprock. The top of the caprock is very flat, so most people think of the panhandle as a flat area. The edge of the caprock, however, rises as much as 800-1000 feet in places above the surrounding rolling plains, and the topography can be dramatic. Caprock Canyons State Park lies in an area where a fork of the Red River runs off the caprock on its way to a junction with the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. From this, one can see where the Red River gets its color and its name.
