Religious Sculpture at High Hill

This statue is in St. Mary's Catholic Church in High Hill, TX. The church was founded in the mid 19th century by German and Austrian immigrants. They built the current church building in 1906 and painted it in 1912. The building's columns were made of wood but painted to resemble the kind of rocks found around the immigrants' ancestral homelands. Because of that and the other decoration in the church, this and other area churches became known as the Painted Churches. The Chamber of Commerce of the nearby town of Schulenburg has tours of the churches, and people come from all over the eastern part of Texas to see them. The church at High Hill is called The Queen of the Painted Churches and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
