The Pinery

The Pinery was an inn and stage stop for the Butterfield Stage Line in the 1850s. The route ran from St. Louis to San Francisco and swung south to pass through Texas and New Mexico. I presume that was to take advantage of lower elevations through the mountain passes and for warmer weather during the winter months.

The stage coaches carried mail and passengers and made the 2000+ mile (almost 4000 km) trip in about three weeks. In other words, around 100 miles a day. Brutal.

The Stage Line built stops like this about every twenty miles (30 km) where the coach could stop and change horses, the passengers could get out and stretch their legs, and maybe get something to eat or drink. If the stop occurred at the appropriate time of day, they could spend the night here.

This location is in Guadalupe Mountains National Park and is at an elevation of almost 6000 ft.
