A safety pin

A safety pin is made of sturdy but flexible metal. By pressing the parallel sides, the pin opens. Safety is to ensure that the tip of the pin is safely hidden in the cap. In the past they were often used to attach diapers, nowadays more as a temporary solution for broken clothing or as a fastener for decorations such as corsages.
