Snowy Owl

The great "Arctic Owl" is not infrequently found on Newfoundland's barren lands. These large white owls are forced south in great numbers when lemmings, their favorite food source, become scarce in the northern tundra regions. This owl begins to arrive in Newfoundland in September and some are reported as late as April.

"Like a silent whisper the snowy owl flew into a winter wilderness

As silently as she had come, silently she left

Tomorrow would be just another day."

From a poem by David Morin
