Bennington Postbac Premed Program
Postbac in the Spotlight: Gabrielle
Bennington's featured Postbac in the Spotlight this week is Gabrielle, who is 24 and from Albany, NY. She graduated in 2010 from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Health Policy and Law and a minor in Political Science. Here, she describes her path to a career in medicine as well as some of her experiences at Bennington.
What influenced your decision to pursue a career in medicine?
“Since my freshman year at Penn I found myself interweaving healthcare and disease into every paper or project—it only made sense to continue on this path of study and see where it leads me! Before pursuing my post bac, I was the Program Assistant for the Health System Quality and Efficiency program at the Commonwealth Fund.”
What’s your favorite aspect of the program and/or Bennington College?
“Bennington has been such a rewarding and fun experience for me. I have always wanted to work at the forefront of healthcare but was uncertain whether I would be successful as a premedical student. Bennington has provided me with a strong foundation in the sciences and has nurtured my interest in medicine. In addition to my coursework, I have had the privilege of being involved in translational research with Dr. Xinjun Zhu and her team in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Albany Medical College.
“Also, I really appreciate Field Work Term, which is a unique opportunity Bennington provides us to spend time during our post bac year exploring any area of healthcare we choose. I am currently enjoying an extremely cold FWT in Milwaukee as an intern for Population Health Management and Payment Innovation at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
“Ultimately what sets Bennington apart from other post bac programs is an ethos of camaraderie and collaboration between students. Two of my favorite memories are from this summer when Alix helped me master “ring flips” with my molecule set and Eva, Karly, and I stayed up late in Longmeadow studying DNA transcription and translation.”
