Chilin'

Two years ago the loon parents on the pond were nervous nellies - I could be 100m away in the kayak and they would already be showing signs of distress and anger. This year was completely different, which was awesome for photography.

This chick is probably only about 10 days old and I know it isn't more than 14 days because it wasn't hatched 14 days prior. Hence, I suspect the chick was nearing the end of "free rides".

This chick was a voracious eater. No matter how much food the parents fetched, this chick would gobble it down as if it had an empty stomach. Maybe that is why they were so unconcerned with me - it was stressful enough to keep up with the calorie demands of the chick and they didn't have the energy to worry about the guy floating in the "plastic log" nearby.

This was taken just before some light rain arrived. The wind had died, allowing for the reflection, and the light was diffuse. I was particularly happy with the catchlight in the eyes.
