Palometa peek-a-boo

Palometas following a spotted eagle-ray feeding in the sand. They are hoping to grab something to eat that the ray stirs up.

As the ray chomps down in the sand looking for food, you may notice that it uses its tail as an anchor. I was thrilled to be able to get a front facing shot that shows the eye, the spots and that tail action, all without a cloud of sand hiding the view.

The ray typically feeds in one spot for a few seconds and then it moves on. One flap of its wings and it gracefully departs to another location. It is very apparent that it is well engineered to move through water, and we are not. Fortunately, this ray was feeding in each spot for a long time and even kept circling back, giving us a 20+ minute show. Special.
