Tug o' war {{explore 14th June}}
R: Cinnamon bug - Corizus hyoscyami
L: Norman "Bites yer legs" Hunter
Spotted these two sparring this morning on a wind whipped Dog Daisy, never having seen the red and black beastie prior to this. Unfortunately, most of the images are unusable because of the wind but this one is of particular note.
A red and black bug which is becoming more common is the rhopalid bug Corizus hyoscyami. It has spread from the south-west of England where it was first recorded and was first found in Worcestershire in the Redditch area in 2006 by Gary Farmer. It is a polyphagus species and known to feed on Storksbills. There are five Worcestershire records for it in Worcestershire Biological Records Centre. The British Bugs website states: locally distributed in sandy habitats around the coasts of southern Britain, this species has recently been found more frequently inland. It is associated with a range of plants, and overwinters as an adult, the new generation appearing in August-September. Nymphs are yellow/red-brown in colour and also rather hairy.
