Close Encounters with the Third

St Johns Cathedral, Denver. One of the churches I explored for the first time last Thursday. It has a really gothic feel to it and it is quite stunning. This shot is of the nave facing the enterance, not the altar. The altar is really cool, but when I went in they were repairing/refurbishing the pipe organ, and had it totally taken apart with pieces everywhere, scaffolding and workers, which kinda ruined the shot. I will go back sometime soon, and shoot it properly.

 

I went in the afternoon and was hoping to get the low sunrays streaming in from the west windows, but unfortunatly, due to the work being done, they had all the lights on so I didn't quite get the contrasting dynamic range I was hopeing for (and the angles were really restricted). But, as is often the case with photography, the unexpected actually turned out to be really pleasing. I think, for better or worse, the ceiling lights have really become a point of interest in this shot and actually the focal point...
