Zebra Slot
One of the world's most photogenic slots is located a mere 28 miles down a dirt road and a 5 mile roundtrip hike from the thriving metropolis of Escalante, Utah. During my first visit to this beauty -- last winter at a temperature of 4 degrees F -- its floor was covered in a thick layer of ice. About fifty yards in, however, I discovered that the ice was not so thick after all (or that I needed to diet) when my camera and I plunged through it into a pool of frigid water so deep that I could not touch the bottom. Suffice it to say, the three foot deep pool of water I waded through this May, to get this photo, was quite refreshing by comparison. I've since decided that skating on thin ice is highly overrated.
