Chartwell was Winston and Clementine Churchill's family home for over 40 years. They purchased it in 1922, the year in which their fifth child was born. It was given to the National Trust in 1946 and opened to visitors in 1966 - the year after Churchill's death at the age of 90.

The house is presented as a home, with the rooms and furniture arranged very much as the family used them throughout the 1920's and 30's when Churchill wrote prolifically. The rooms are light and airy and contain many portraits of Churchill himself as well as a magnificent collection of gifts, memorabilia, honours, medals, uniforms and books, his own paintings alongside family photographs and the famous Visitor Book recording those who visited Chartwell - which formed such a vital part of his long life.
