Alumni_Gym_1950
The Alumni Memorial Gymnasium was built in 1949 at a cost of $245,000 to honor all Elon alumni who lost their lives in World War I and World War II. The gym officially opened on January 14, 1950 with a basketball game between Elon and Catawba College, and was later officially dedicated on December 2, 1950. A bronze plaque inscribed with 37 names of known Elon alumni who died in service was originally placed in the front entrance hallway and now hangs in the Koury Center Concourse entrance. Alumni Memorial Gym (now part of the Koury Center) still stands in its original location with the facade of the building still facing Haggard Avenue. The powerhouse seen to the right of Alumni Gym in this postcard was erected in 1949 to replace the older powerhouse on campus, which operated central heating, lighting and water systems; it was razed in 1998 to make way for Belk Library, which still stands in this location to date.
