Questioning Expression
A Conceptual Look at Gender Roles in Commercial and Fashion Photography
When faced with images in the media, we often see females portrayed with glossy lips and males with facial hair. Men are never seen with such suggestive expressions as the slightly opened, pouting mouth, which adorn the faces of almost every woman in advertising. It certainly does not “fit” the unshaven face, as males are usually seen smiling or have their lips pressed firmly together. Inspired by such strict gender rules, these photographs go against the norm, and act as a reminder that expression can grace the faces of any sex, shaven or unshaven.
