Head Wrightson Steam Engine 'Coffee Pot' No.17 returns to Seaham Harbour

A look into our more recent archive photos unearthed this photo of Head Wrightson Loco No.17 at its original home of Seaham Harbour. You can see an archive photo of No.17 at Seaham here. Curator of Transport Paul Jarman tells us more:

We took it back to Seaham after it was cosmetically overhauled to pose it on the dock-side, where it had worked between 1873 and 1962. Whilst the original track has long since corroded or been covered by later concrete, there was as short section we could place it on, with the blessing of the Seaham Harbour Dock Company (one of the engine’s former owners).

A number of former Seaham workers, including the engine’s driver, came to see it and we also launched a painting of this engine alongside Lewin (available from the Museum gift shop!). It subsequently returned to Seaham on three occasions, visiting school playgrounds as part of an outreach project.
